The Hard Work Behind the Spotlight
Being a tribute artist is far more than simply performing on stage. It’s a demanding, multi-faceted career that involves long hours, meticulous preparation, and a true passion for entertainment. Behind every performance is a dedicated professional who spends countless hours preparing, travelling, and perfecting their craft. Let’s dive into a day in the life of a tribute artist, where the show doesn’t just happen—it’s earned.
The Early Morning Grind: The Calm Before the Storm
A tribute artist’s day usually starts long before the first note is played. For many, the morning is spent preparing wigs, costumes, and makeup. Each tribute act demands attention to detail to replicate the look and style of the artist they are honouring. A wig will need styling, a costume carefully ironed, and makeup needs to be planned down to the finest detail to ensure authenticity, getting everything perfect before leaving the house.
But the preparation doesn’t stop there. The artist has to check through their setlist and make sure their voice is ready for the performance. Vocal warm-ups, stretching, and of course a healthy breakfast are all important in preparing the body and mind for a physically demanding night ahead.
The Long Haul: Traveling for the Show
Once everything is prepared, it’s time to hit the road. For a tribute artist, the journey is just as important as the performance. Many shows require artists to travel hundreds of miles—sometimes clocking up 300 to 400 miles in a single day. Depending on the location, this could mean hours in the car or van, navigating through traffic, and keeping up with strict schedules to ensure they arrive with enough time to set up.
The travel time is also spent getting into the right headspace for the show. Whether listening to the artist’s music to stay inspired or running through songs, it’s essential for the tribute artist to stay focused on what lies ahead.
Setting Up: Crafting the Atmosphere
Arriving at the venue, the work is far from over. The tribute artist is usually involved in setting up their own equipment, including sound systems, microphones, and lighting. They work closely with the venue staff to ensure the stage is ready for the performance. Lighting plays a crucial role in recreating the atmosphere of the original artist, and it’s not just about hitting the right cues—it’s about bringing an entire experience to the audience.
This setup time can take anywhere from an hour to 2-3 hours, depending on the complexity of the performance. But once everything is in place, it’s time to prepare for the main event.
The Performance: Bringing the Icon to Life
Now, it’s showtime. After hours of preparation, it’s time to hit the stage and bring the iconic artist’s music, style, and energy to life. Whether performing to a sold-out theatre or an intimate crowd, the tribute artist channels the essence of the person they are paying homage to, delivering a performance that’s about more than just mimicking their voice or look.
Tribute artists are entertainers at their core, and they know the importance of engaging the audience, keeping the energy high, and delivering an unforgettable experience.
The Final Stretch: Packing Down and Heading Home
After the applause dies down and the show ends, the tribute artist’s job is far from over. The venue has to be packed down, and all the equipment—including costumes, props, and lighting—needs to be carefully packed away. This process can be exhausting, especially after a high-energy performance, but it’s essential to ensure everything is ready for the next gig.
And then, the final leg of the journey begins. The drive home, often after a long and tiring day, can sometimes mean another 2 to 3 hours behind the wheel. For some tribute artists, that can mean arriving back home in the early hours of the morning—sometimes clocking up 18+ hour days.
The Unseen Reality: Dedication Behind the Scenes
For many, being a tribute artist is a passion, but it’s also a job that requires immense dedication and a willingness to work hard. The audience may only see the performance, but behind every show is a full day of preparation, travel, and post-show efforts. It’s a lifestyle that demands flexibility, resilience, and a love for music and entertainment.
So, the next time you find yourself enjoying a tribute act, remember the hours of hard work, the travel, and the endless attention to detail that goes into creating the show. It’s not just about the performance—it’s about everything that comes before and after it, making it all possible for the audience to experience the magic.
